Behavioral Health Service Line Build
A behavioral health business that had grown without a plan, given a strategy, a scorecard and a billable model that brought it into primary care.
The situation
The platform's behavioral health and psychiatry line had grown into a multi-million-dollar business, but it ran without a formal strategy or a performance system. Programs, locations and hires were added as opportunities came up, with no agreed view of what the line should become and no leading indicators to tell the executive team whether the line was on track.
Behavioral health and primary care shared many of the same patients, but no billable model connected the two.
What I built
A strategic plan for the service line: pillars, revenue and headcount targets phased by quarter, a named owner for each goal, and a mid-year review against every target
The operating scorecard the executive team tracked the plan on, with leading indicators reported monthly
A Collaborative Care Model bringing behavioral health into primary care: the reimbursement analysis, the billing and finance models, the delivery-vendor evaluation, and the launch at six primary care locations
A new adolescent psychiatry and psychological-testing program, with its pro forma and a rate proposal to the platform's anchor commercial payer
Pro formas for specialty psychiatry expansion: medication-assisted treatment, chronic pain and treatment-resistant depression
The result
The service line's first data-backed growth plan, run on a scorecard with quarterly targets and owners
Therapist headcount rose from 37 to 55 in seven months, tracked against the plan's quarterly targets
Behavioral health and psychiatry revenue roughly tripled, from about $5M in 2021 to about $15M in 2023
A billable Collaborative Care Model that treated patients with both medical and behavioral needs in one model
A new adolescent psychiatry program in service
